Art

At All Saints, we believe that art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.

Art plays an important role in nurturing children’s curiosity and appreciation of the world around them. Through engaging and carefully structured lessons, pupils are encouraged to explore ideas, develop confidence and communicate their thoughts and feelings in visual form.

Through the art curriculum at All Saints, we strive to motivate and inspire children by providing creative, hands-on learning opportunities. We use Kapow as our core scheme, which supports clear progression of knowledge and skills across each year group. This ensures that children systematically build and refine their artistic techniques, understanding and confidence over time.

We also enrich the curriculum beyond the scheme. We supplement Kapow units with additional art opportunities, which may be linked to our wider project-based learning or delivered as stand-alone units. This allows children to apply their skills in meaningful contexts while also exploring creativity independently.

As pupils progress, they develop the ability to think critically and build a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They learn how art reflects and shapes history and contributes to culture, creativity and the wider world.

Aims of the Art Curriculum

In line with the National Curriculum, we aim to ensure that all pupils:

• Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
• Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
• Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
• Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

Key Stage 2 Expectations

Within Key Stage 2, pupils are taught to develop their techniques with increasing control and creativity. They:

• Use sketchbooks to record observations and review and revisit ideas
• Improve their mastery of drawing, painting and sculpture using a range of materials (e.g. pencil, charcoal, paint, clay)
• Develop an awareness of different art
